To celebrate International Women’s Day, we sat down for a Q&A with our own Vice President of Finance, Jamie Lester, to discuss her role in the data center industry and share insight on how women can continue to make a mark in a fast-paced and evolving market.
Currently, Lester leads the financial operations of the organization, spanning across multiple offices, data centers, project locations and services. She’s been with Ascent for more than two decades and has been instrumental to help build the company from the ground up by instilling financial clarity and business intelligence in client services. Additionally, Lester is responsible for leading a team for accounts payable and business processing services that are critical to delivering in-depth transparency into maintenance work completed at thousands of facilities as part of Ascent’s Navigator Platform. Lester and her team work directly with internal teams including 24×7 Ascent Operations Center, Contracts & Procurement, Engineering & Construction and Site Operations as well as with clients to provide comprehensive, full-service support.
When did you start working with Ascent and what was it like to join into the data center space as a woman?
I began working for Ascent right out of college and have been able to grow within since the start. I find myself lucky to have joined Ascent, a company that doesn’t limit your career growth due to your gender.
What are the biggest misconceptions about being a woman in the data center industry?
The biggest misconception is that women can’t break through to upper management. Aim to be a self-starter and work hard. Quality managers and leaders will recognize your potential.
What do you enjoy most about working in the industry?
What’s most enjoyable is the fast pace. This industry keeps you on your toes and you’re always learning something new!
What’s one piece of advice you would share with women who are entering the industry?
Set your goals and continuously and tirelessly work towards them. Be involved in the business as much as you can!
